2015 REVISED EDITION

Scarlet of Lysia is an honest pedlar, a young merchant traveling the wild, undefended roads to support his aging parents. Liall, called the Wolf of Omara, is the handsome, world-weary chieftain of a tribe of bandits blocking a mountain road that Scarlet needs to cross. When Liall jokingly demands a carnal toll for the privilege, Scarlet refuses and an inventive battle of wills ensues, with disastrous results.

Scarlet is convinced that Liall is a worthless, immoral rogue, but when the hostile countryside explodes into violence and Liall unexpectedly fights to save the lives of Scarlet's family, Scarlet is forced to admit that the Wolf is not the worst ally he could have, but what price will proud Scarlet ultimately have to pay for Liall's friendship?

Ehh. I didn't have any massive problems with this, but there were so many little things that bothered me that I ended up rushing to get to the end and be done with the it. There's definitely sweetness and potential in there, but... eeeh. I wish there'd been less use of the fantasy "gypsy" trope, as that definitely set my teeth on edge. (The American writer might not have been aware of how terribly Roma people are treated in Europe, and how offensive that term is to many of them, but it's still pretty horrifying to come across a real minority presented as a bit of flavor in a rather bland fantasy world, but still...) Also: it's unfortunate that the book description gives away something that happens well over halfway through the story.

Scarlet and the White Wolf edition by Kirby Crow Romance eBooks Reviews

I am wildly ecstatic about this book, the main character Scarlet is an honorable person living a simple life when he meets a mysterious tribal leader and foreigner named Liall and they hit it off disastrously at first.

They both find that they like the other, but pride and honor stands in between them, and they have their own secrets to keep that force them to distrust each other.

Events unfold that impact Scarlet's world and thrusts him into an uncertain future while Liall's past is finally catching up to him threatening to swallow him whole, and where the past and the future intersect they meet and struggle to survive.

This was a wonderful story and I HIGHLY recommend it. It is both touching and heartbreaking, simple and complicated, thrilling and discouraging. The characters highly contrast each other beautifully and the tension is delicious.
Upon finishing this book, my initial thoughts were... I need more stars to rate it properly!

I really loved this one. Scarlet was such a wonderful character, he won my heart very early on. And Liall... OhMY! How much do I love Liall?! I want to keep him for my very own!

This was my third time reading Kirby Crow. Kirby's writing just knocks my socks right off. So vivid, so packed full of emotion, just so all around fabulous. With this book it was no different. The character development was exceptional and the world building so wonderfully done I often found myself wondering if the author wasn't pulling from some real, far away place of old. Descriptions so vivid and colorful; so well done I would find myself deeply lost in the story, seeing and feeling just what the characters were.

Bottom line A wonderful tale. Fabulously written. Perfect book to kick back with for a weekend read.
I've read (literally) hundreds of M/M books and find myself usually disappointed with the unerring multitude of overly graphic and minutely described ten page salacious sex scenes(noted down to drops of sweat - and much like two mountain goats rutting on a hill)and almost no plot!! BORING! I keep trying though, hoping desperately to run across a stellar book like Scarlet & The White Wolf (and its two sequels). The characters are multi-dimensional and totally believable and the plot is rich with detail and description. For once, I found real romance and not immediate, ferocious sex on the floor, just inside the door, with buttons flying. The result the most stupendous, earth-shaking, transcendental other-worldly event in the characters' lives! The suspense about the protagonists' growing attraction is what makes the book (read, ANY book) interesting. I only wish I could give this book six stars. I've read the entire series twice and found it just as great the second time. I fully intend to read again in a year or so. This one's a keeper!

I would imagine that the few folks who disapproved of this book are great fans of the kind of books I mentioned at the beginning of this review!!!!
I purchased the three books after checking a few sites and seeing this series was well received in the m/m readership. First of all you need to know what to expect. This is a fantasy. The focus is on the life of a wandering peddler, his travels, his race, and his family. His world is changing and his people are either loathed or feared, therefore they must be destroyed.

The series explains the growth of Scarlet and the changes in his life. How he stays true to the values of his parents and his people. His journey isn't easy and there are setbacks. There is a slow building relationship, with lots of promise. Scarlet isn't sure of his being gay. Over time and circumstances that changes.

While this is a m/m book the smex scenes aren't erotic or overly descriptive. The focus is more on who they are, how they accept the changes in their lives, how they handle their relationship in a fraught world. Like living in a goldfish bowl. Outside forces determine a lot in their relationship, while death and danger are a big part.

This series was written in 2007. I had to check the author's page, that's how captivated I was. I was thrilled to see a 4th book in this series will be out this year and from reading the excerpt, my questions will be answered. Like how can the ruling line be continued? Are there factions against them or is the danger over? What is happening to Scarlet's people in his homeland and will he offer them refuge? Or can he? Will he be trained to handle his evolving powers?

All I can say is why did it take six years to continue this series! -- Dan's Wife
3.5 Stars. This one started out a little slow for me and to be honest for quite a while I really didn't like Scarlet all that much. He had a tendency to react with a temper tantrum and fly off the handle. He was also really judgmental. I liked the Wolf and I thought some of the secondary characters were really interesting. I also enjoyed the world building and could picture the setting quite well.

Thankfully, Scarlet grew through the book and by the end I liked him and thought that his character growth redeemed the book. This is definitely a VERY slow burn and ends with a cliff hanger. I am definitely interested to see where it will go and look forward to the next book which I think I will like a lot more now that Scarlet has grown.
Ehh. I didn't have any massive problems with this, but there were so many little things that bothered me that I ended up rushing to get to the end and be done with the it.
