Kate Unmasked Code of Silence Book 1 eBook Cindy M Hogan Reviews

Kate Unmasked, book 1 in The Code of Silence series—a thrilling story about a girl whose desire to know who here real parents are lead her into dangerous paths that might be her doom. Like the tagline says, “Some secrets should stay dead and buried.”

What I liked about the book (all of Cindy M Hogan’s books actually) is that it’s clean. She proves that it is possible to have a thrilling suspense novel set in modern times that is free of language and sexual content without damaging the story or the believability. I liked that I could relate well with Kate and even see some of myself in her. This books makes you sit back and think what you would do if you were in Kate’s position. It’s a book filled with suspense, mystery, a dash of romance, and above all—page turning fun. While not all the mysteries were solved in book 1 she gives you enough to satisfy and teases you to read book 2. I can’t wait to read book 2, Kate Concealed, and luckily I don’t have to. It is also available. Don’t you love authors that get their books out quick?
This book read like a movie. I thought it was fantastic. From the cover, to the descriptive language, to the characters, the plot, the emotion and more I loved it! This felt like a very realistic and fresh story because the characters were discussing reality tv, adoption, teenage relationships, parental trust and more. All items that we do talk about or see in our regular life. I enjoyed the way the book ended as well. It had a cliffhanger, but one that was not like really you end there! I also like that it is a series or that at least there will be more because I have questions...like why did the dad not do more, is the mom alive, what happens to those that helped her out, and more!!

The only issue, really not even an issue, that I had was the scene with the reality tv star. I didn't get the way that played out. I didn't get the actions that the friend took, the actions the star took towards the end, etc. I kept waiting for it to be that the family took action, but that didn't happen. I just felt bad that it was one more thing Kate worried/felt guilty about.

Would I recommend this book..yes I would. I thought it was fantastic and I can't wait for the next one in this story line to come out!!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
I enjoyed Kate Unmasked. It is a fun, interesting mystery that I would feel comfortable having my teens read.

As a mother reading this story the efficiency and organization of Kate’s home would be my dream come true. Kate is such an obedient child that cares about passing her physics exam with high marks, is kind to her siblings, plays her piano for hours, responsibly does her chores, does extra to surprise and please her mother, plays basketball full on, etc…. That child rarely exists, and to have a whole family of children that are so close to perfect is pretty implausible. A dream maybe but then life sure would be rather boring. Although is that a bad thing? I’m waffling here.

Kate Unmasked is a story of finding yourself. A journey that is much more difficult for the adopted child. I have four adopted children from two separate birth families. One lesson that my husband and I took away from foster care training is to never try to make a child’s past prettier than it is and to never lie or hide available information about their past. We have never regretted the choice to follow those precepts. Kate’s parents made the opposite decision, hiding all of the available information and generally misleading her.  It just about gets Kate killed. I got quite angry with Kate’s parents for allowing her to go to some of the extreme measures that she did knowing that there would be no answers. Their duplicity led the dream child to become a rebellious one out of sheer frustration. There wouldn’t have been much of a story though without those decisions and their effect upon Kate.

Kate Unmasked generated emotion in me. Not every writer can do that. Additionally, the book ended in a great way and had me ready to move on to the second story in the series. In my world that is a great story.

I received a review copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My thanks to the author and publisher.
